4.0 out of 5 stars Cuisinart at it's best., September 13, 2013

This review is from: Cuisinart EM-200 Programmable 15-Bar Espresso Maker, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
This is one hell of a machine. It came perfectly packed to protect against any possible damage. I had it on my wish list for a while but couldn't make up my mind. It was selling for $199 but, when the price showed for $162 one day I knew that it would not stay for long. So I jumped at it.
My first brew was lousy, as I knew it would be. The first week wasn't all that great that at one point I almost made the mistake of sending it back. But I knew that I can't be like the guy trying to paint and blames the paint brush when he does a lousy job. So, by 10 days I was making cappuccino that would rival the best of them. And like my brother says, these machines work better after they've seasoned. Here I am 2 months later and I am quite happy with my purchase. So much so that each time I think of going out for breakfast and start thinking of the coffee I am going to get there I always without fail decide against it and stay home with my Cuisinart. Great machine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great machine, here's my notes..., August 20, 2010
This review is from: Cuisinart EM-200 Programmable 15-Bar Espresso Maker, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
I've had this machine now 4 months. I've had many machines before it, including the ever popular DeLonghi. This is an amazing machine, but there are a few things to know.

1. All espresso machines, and even some coffee machines, need to be primed. If there is water in the tank, yet it's not pumping but making noise, chances are you just need to prime it. Turn the steam knob just like in the manual, and if it fails, try again. You only have to do this when you first get the machine, or if you some how let it run dry.

2. The specs list this as not coming with a tamper, that's only partially correct. It comes with a plastic scoop / tamper combo thang. Before you get too annoyed with it, I recommend ordering "RSVP Terry's Tamper" (probably advertised on the same page). It's less than 7 bucks, and the small side fits this machines portafilter perfectly.

3. Some reviewers have knocked this machine because the "Filter keeps getting clogged". Here's a news... Read more

This review is from: Cuisinart EM-200 Programmable 15-Bar Espresso Maker, Stainless Steel (Kitchen)
it is the perfect maker for the home. I was a barista for 3 years and this machine definitely makes café` worthy cappuccinos, mocha etc.... I love it and it is worth the money. I was discouraged at first when I read some of the complaints but I had a gut feeling to just bite the bullet and try it on my own....obviously I am very happy with my purchase. I think the people who had complaints were expecting the machine to be more like a robot. Yes you have to wait about a minute for the steamer portion to warm up before you use it but that's nothing compare to the cheapo cappuccino machine I use to get. Same for the brewing portion, you press the on button wait about a minute and a half for it warm before you make your espresso shot(s). It's worth the money and I hope you will to. 🙂

5.0 out of 5 stars The key is the pressurized portafilter design, guarantees a quality espresso shot, January 8, 2015
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Mr. Coffee Automatic Dual Shot Espresso/Cappuccino System (Kitchen)
*Update*: Still like this machine but just beware that the screws in the water tank rust. The rust crumbles off and falls onto a ledge inside the water tank, not directly into the water, but it's possible little pieces of rust can tumble into the water.

This machine is a great value for the quality of espresso you get out of it. The portafilter (the thing that holds the coffee) is pressurized (read up on pressurized vs non-pressurized portafilters), which is the key to why this is a safe beginner machine. A pressurized portafilter will not release coffee until enough pressure has built up within the basket, extracting dense flavor, the key to a good espresso. Non-pressurized portafilters rely on the fine grain of espresso ground coffee being tightly compacted into the basket (called tamping) to provide a similar resistance (fyi, espresso snobs demand a non-pressurized basket supposedly because it gives more control over the extraction process). This machine is designed to... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Great beginner machine, not for picky or professional baristas, September 26, 2016
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Mr. Coffee Automatic Dual Shot Espresso/Cappuccino System (Kitchen)
I am not a professional by any means, but I was a barista at a successful "mom n pop" coffee shop for a year, so I know how to pull a good shot and properly steam milk. I like good coffee, but I'm not a stickler. I wanted to be able to make my own espresso for americanos and the occasional latte at home. I did my research and decided on this machine because it's under 100 bucks which is what I was looking for. I also was looking at the Hamilton beach one that's under 100, and the delonghi. I know that's a better brand but this machine was a little cheaper and had similar reviews. This one is very user friendly, you definitely don't have to have barista experience to get a shot from it. Extreme coffee people might say it doesn't pull a "real" shot because it doesn't require espresso fine ground coffee (real espresso grounds should be as fine as powdered sugar and fit between the lines of your fingerprint) you can actually use it with regular ground coffee for a drip... This review is from: Mr. Coffee Automatic Dual Shot Espresso/Cappuccino System (Kitchen)
Great machine for the price. Steaming arm actually works on this generation. A few notes: 1. Take off and throw away the rubber/plastic thing on the steaming wand. 2. prime the steaming wand; a good squirt of water comes out first; you don't want that in your milk!!. 3. prime the brew head as well for a few secs--twice; some cold water will get in your coffee if you don't. 4. after you're done brewing and have removed the portafilter, rinse the brewhead by just priming it for a couple secs--twice. This will get any coffee grounds off the "showerhead." 5. ALWAYS brew into clear shot glasses; 25-30 secs MAX. If you're not getting two oz. of espresso by 30 secs, your grind is too fine or too packed. Less than 25 secs??? Grind finer or pack more for good strong shots. A simple digital kitchen timer is all you need. Also, if you don't know what a good shot looks like; heart, body, crema, ask a Barista at your Local GOOD Coffeehouse; not Starbucks. They don't even... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Great espresso with crema! With answers to others negatives, August 29, 2011

This review is from: De'Longhi EC155 15 BAR Pump Espresso and Cappuccino Maker (Kitchen)
I am Italian, born and raised. Moved to US at 30 yrs old. Moved to an area where there's no Italian-American influence, no chance of going out for an espresso. Only Starbucks... no thanks. Thought I could go by without espresso for 6 years (what was I thinking??? I don't know). Then sudden espresso cravings made me buy this espresso machine. De Longhi is a very common brand in Italy for any type of home appliances. I've had this machine for 6 months now, using it every day. It's awesome. Like the espresso cup you'd get in Italy "al bar". It gives a thick layer of "crema" on top of each cup.

Here some answers to other reviewers' cons:

* somebody wrote the water was not coming out and returned the machine: you need to bang the water tank real hard in position, otherwise it doesn't connect. It happened to me first time using it... I thought machine was defective too because coffee was not coming out. My husband banged it in there and started working... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Affordable, Reliable, and Semi-Long Lasting Espresso Machine - Ideal for the Coffee Enthusiast, May 6, 2017
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: De'Longhi EC155 15 BAR Pump Espresso and Cappuccino Maker (Kitchen)
I'm coming up (or just passed) about the three year mark using one of my EC155 machines (one is used much more than the other) and I can say that I've just about reached the end of the machine's lifetime. For the first two years of use, I pulled 18g shots two to three times a day and this past year has been an average of one pull a day in the morning (16g of coffee). If I compare the performance of the machine I use much more often and the machine that has about half a year's worth of use on it, I can definitely say that my three years of heavy use have just about knocked my EC155 out of its full capacity. The power of the pumps in the two machines have a night and day difference - I have to be very careful with how much coffee I load in the portafilter in the machine I use more to make sure it can still push out anything. As a side note, I can still achieve proper crema and pour lattes in both.

Seeing as it's time to replace the dying EC155 I've reached a crossroads that... Read more

BEWARE!!! This machine does make decent espresso... WHILE IT WORKS. Over the course of about 2 1/2 years, I owned three of these machines. I had been advised that at this price point, about a year is all you can expect so each time there was an issue, I purchased another. The third time, I added the extra three-year insurance plan and figured I would have a decent espresso machine for three years without any further expense.

However, about 2 months into machine #3, metal shards started shaving off the machine and going into the tray - and my coffee! Also, I was having minor leakage problems as well as a lot more noise (like a straining motor) that I'd never experienced before.

DeLonghi customer service was among the worst I have ever dealt with. I was on hold for hours over at least 5 different phone calls. I was promised by more than one rep that they would take over the case and call me back with any updates and you guessed it, that never, ever happened. Each... Read more
