First, found out it was made in Romania and not Italy - kind of disappointing since a 15 year old Italian Gaggia I had lasted so long. Still, thought I should give it a chance...unboxed it and it's missing 2 parts - though likely an Amazon error as I did get a "used like new" from their warehouse deals (which was SUPPOSED to include all parts - NOT). They can't be blamed for the user manual, though, which has faulty english translation and it missing at least one integrally important diagram. Correct page numbers and bound like new, just badly written and missing information! Can't believe Gaggia didn't quality check something so basic. And yes, mine like others arrived with water and dampness which is not a grave concern but this missing parts infuriate me. Will update review if I keep this but already turned off that Gaggia has seemed to compromise on their quality of late.

This review is from: Gaggia 102534 Espresso-Color Semi-Automatic Espresso Machine, Red (Kitchen)
I live in Seattle, the home of Starbucks and home to the best espresso shops in the country. I don't drink Starbucks. I did for a while until I had a heavenly espresso at one of Seattle's best indie espresso shops. Now I know what real espresso tastes like (hint - it's not at Starbucks) and with this machine I have access to it everyday. The 1st one I bought was defective and I returned it. The 2nd one works like a charm and it never fails to churn out beautiful golden shots with a nice layer of dreamy crema. Even when I fail (wrong grind, lazy tamping) it still pulls a beautiful shot. A few tips:

#1 - Read the instructions and make sure you follow each step; this includes allowing the pump to fill with water and letting it reach the right temperature. After you do it a couple of times it'll be easy-peezy. If you skip steps you may get some less than desirable results

#2 - Good beans are a must! Fresh, oily beans are best and I prefer a dark roast. Store them in... Read more

I purchased this machine in May, 2014. It is now nearly Christmas and I am ordering a replacement. The machine was always high maintenance, but those of us passionate for espresso are usually willing to take the extra time to get it. I can't tell you how meticulous I've been with this machine. Because there are several small parts indispensable to brewing the espresso, I ordered extra parts. I recently replaced the gasket. I cleaned out the machine with the Gaggia chelating mixture every other month.

Last month 2 tiny pieces in the brew head fell out. Turns out they can't be replaced. The entire brew head would have to be replaced which costs slightly under half the cost of the machine's value. Now it leaks in several places.

I recommend you buy a machine from a different company and purchase a service contract for it.

I usually don't write reviews, because I just don't have time for it, but this time I decided to write one. We were very happy with the product when just got it, but in about a year or even less the steam wand broke. We were told to ship the whole machine back to the company for the repair, so we did. They "fixed" it and sent it back to us in a few weeks. After they "fixed" the steam wand, it started making a very loud noise while frothing the milk, that it wasn't making it before we shipped it. We were not satisfied with the fix, but figured, ok, we'll deal with that, we are not actually picky people - it is still frothing the milk, even though it was making a very loud, annoying whistling, wheezing, the best I can describe it noise.
Another year has passed, we were still making coffee with this machine, "enjoying" the loud noise while frothing the milk every morning. Then suddenly the steam wand came off the machine completely, the plastic joint, for... Read more

This product was nice for about six months, then began acting up, with a grinding/buzzing noise while steaming milk. It then no longer really steamed the milk, just sort of warmed it. But this review is more about Cuisinart as a terrible and very difficult company to work with as a customer. For more than the past two months, we have attempted to get this product repaired. It took more than two weeks to get a UPS return label to send it back and many hours of time on hold. The reason is took two weeks was that it takes five business days for Cuisinart to send a UPS return label for some silly reason; then they messed up the order for the label and we had to restart the clock for the label, finally receiving one more than two weeks later. We returned the product and it was repaired and returned in a surprisingly quick time period. We got it back, quite excited, turned the machine on and it immediately began leaking hot water from the bottom of the unit. Since then, May 19, we... Read more

So, had this product for a year, here are the pros and cons.

Pros:
Idiot-proof, mostly. Press a button, espresso comes out. Press another button, turn a knob, steam comes out.
Steam nozzle is a champ, especially if you use the small milk container provided with the machine. Very easy to make rich, hot, creamy, foamy milk. Very impressed with this feature.
Easy to clean the exterior components.
Quality of the cappuccinos/lattes you can produce with this machine is fair (see more below).
It still works, mostly, after a year, which is more than I can say for most of the kitchen devices made in China that I purchase these days.

Cons:
Hard to control quality of beverage. If you are diligent in cleaning out the machine with vinegar on a regular basis (kind of a hassle), you can get a decently strong espresso with an okay crema. Plan, though, on cleaning out your machine at least once a month, or you will get a weaker brew with no crema, and... Read more

Please note that I just got this machine yesterday. Today I used the espresso side and the coffee side. The review I am giving is based on these uses only.

First of all, this is one nice looking machine. I love how it looks on my counter, and I really like the fact that the frother can be tucked in when not in use.

When the machine came out of the box, there was a very strong smell of plastic. I immediately put every removable piece through the dishwasher. I was worried, but NO there was NO plastic taste to anything that I made.

Some things about the espresso side that I was very very pleased with: the frother worked very well, moreso than with other Mr. Coffee machines I have used in the past. The lid to the carafe was a rubbery material rather than hard plastic, which is good because with my last machine I had a problem with the lid falling into the carafe. I made a great cappuccino in a very short period of time. I will agree with other... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Style AND Substance - A GREAT Coffeemaker, April 3, 2007

This review is from: Mr. Coffee ECM21 4-Shot Espresso Machine and 8-Cup Coffeemaker Combo, Black (Kitchen)
I have had this machine since February and use it nearly every day. This is definitely one of the best coffeemakers I have ever owned, and I haven't had one single problem with it.

When I was deciding whether or not to buy it, some of the negative reviews had me a little skeptical. But I am SO glad that I took a chance. It was absolutely worth it for me.

I honestly don't see how some of the reviewers have had some of the problems that they have. Reviewer 'Joan of Arc' seemed to have quite a bit of leakage problems. It must have been a defective machine, because ours hasn't leaked one time -- not even a little drop. I'll go over a few of the issues she and some others had:

- The removable water reservoir (or "bucket" as she called it) for the coffeemaker is easy to remove and replace. If you don't want to take it out to fill it with water, just pour water into it. It is marked clearly and is easy to read even when stationed on the machine. No... Read more

This review is from: Mr. Coffee ECM21 4-Shot Espresso Machine and 8-Cup Coffeemaker Combo, Black (Kitchen)
I bought this as a gift for my husband, who works at StarBucks. He wanted an "all in one." It works very well; we've used it every day since Christmas. My husband had a Krupps espresso maker and he likes this one better.., the "frother" thing, (as you can see I'm not the espresso maker), is hotter and works longer than the move expensive Krupps version. I like the coffee maker because the water resovoir pops off, and back on, really easy.., and so you don't have to do the pouring-into-a-hole thing. Also, the basket that holds the filter and coffe grounds., it also pops in and out easily and makes for a no-mess exchange of old and new. Plus, that means the water bucket and coffee basket are easy to clean. (No "old" coffee taste that you can't wash out.)

I read other reports of leaking.., ours does not leak at all. However, if you don't put the water spout thingie back over the coffee grounds.., any unit will leak/fill/brew wrong. (And you have to have a moveable water spout... Read more
